this is what i came home to after 2 wks hols
I expected to come home to something but not this, as you can see I have a major clean up operation on my hands. This type of algae is normally related to excess iron so I don’t know what is going on because all water stats, ph, ammonia etc read normal, except c02 which was lower than normal.
The only thing I can think of at this moment is that with fitting the auto feeder I had to remove one of the light units so the lights were running at only half the normal so I reduced the c02 to half to compensate, this could have had an effect on the over all outcome.
The other problems I have noticed are:
1. The fish seem to be a bit stressed
2. The neon’s have serious faults, i.e. fungus on their noses, one has a twisted body and others have fin & tail rot.
3. The rainbows have a strange green color cast over their backs and seem to have lost a lot of their color at the moment and one looks like it has a white spot on its side of which I am watching very closely, hoping its not white spot. The female seems not to be able to swim properly as she is swimming with her body to the left side.
4. The angels also had lost a lot of their color and have damage to their long thin front fins, which I think is to do with the battle for the food at feeding time of which I was concerned with before I went a way.
So what now?
What I have done so far is to remove as much algae as possible, but there is so much it is going to take a lot of cleaning over the next few weeks or so and an 80L WC. I didn’t do a massive WC so as to try and not stress the fish any more and not to alter the water stats too quickly to get them back in line with what should be normal for the tank. I will do another WC in a day or so. I also dosed with flourish excel as this helped rid this algae in the smaller tank before.
Unfortunately when I got up this morning I had a fatality, one dead otto.
