August 23:
My pink convict (pinky) and my smaller black convicts (stripes) are now a pair. after my male was moved from the 40 gallon community tank because of my mature male (spot) and his mate (zinger) beat up on him intell he stayed at the top. i felt bad for him and got him pinky. he hated her for a week then soon found she was the one stripes found the lizard cave and made sure everyone knew it was his last week. and now today stripes is flaring and dancing with pinky. will be looking for eggs and where the female hides and protects. the 40 gallon community with spot and zinger. Spot and zinger are almost ready to spawn again as it has been 2 weeks since there last spawn (ate there eggs) and ive noticed that the female has colored up. ive been feeding everyone brine shrimp, bloodworms, tubfliex worms, flakes and alge pellets.
August 26: removed fry from there half of the tank as stripes was getting aggresive. temp. is 79 F right now just lots of flarining. ill update soon.
August 28: to my surprise spot and zinger had another spawn!!! im putting that tank spliter in to keep female and other fish away from eggs!
August 29: added a sponage fliter and small 5 gallon fliter to give eggs oxygen. put rid ich to stop fungus will repet soon. 2 days left!!!! update later to day.
August 30: pinky had her eggs to!!!!!! at this rate im going to have to open a fish farm!
August 31: can see pinkys spawns eyes! should hatch tonight!
September 1: all of zingers eggs turned white. but i can still see eyes in pinkys spawn hopeing tonight they hatch!
they hatched! i can see about 40-60 wigglers!
September 2: all eggs have hatched some wigglers got into the rest of the tank and were eattin but theres still alot.
Later that day: i have just been told that im going to have to travel this tuesday -whenever i get back i guess. so i will test the growth of the fry i put 3 in a small 1/2gallon jar. one has no gravel or decor, one has just gravel, and the other has a plant and gravel. then i might also have a 2 gallon vase that will have gravel and a live plant. i will study the growth paterns and update once there full grown so my last update will be September 03, 2007 in tell i get back.
September 3: they are still wigglers wow this is getting boring.
Some tips:
from what ive learned your convicts will start breeding within 3 months of being put into you tank. if they havent bred make sure that they are male and female. if they havent breed get the temp. to 80F then turn heater off and let it cool. it sets the mood for them. try feeding bloodworms and tubeflix worms my convicts like alge waffers. once they have spawend they female will gaurd eggs as male makes sure no ones near. they will stop at nothing to keep others away from eggs. feed fry baby brine shrimp and crushed flakes ONCE they are free swimming. parents will eat eggs first a second spawn so if you want to save eggs then remove them or put a tank spliter. if you have any other questions or tips feel free to post below.
