first thing i have to ask is were did you get it? did you buy it or did it show up in the tank?
reason i ask is it looks like a form of duckweed.
is it shinny on top & matt green underneath? if so i would say it is duckweed, unless you have something similar alreadt in the tank.

It just showed up in the tank, I'm assuming that it came in on my new plants i bought a couple of weeks ago. And it is sort of shinny on top and mat green underneath with little fine root systems hanging down from them

defo duckweed.
sounds like seeds came in with the plants you got
it can be used to de-nitrate the tank. but you have to watch that it doesnt get out of hand or it will over run it.
do a google ''duckweed'' a good few topics with pics for you.
